May Wellness Guide: Nutrition, Movement & Mental Well-Being

May month is dedicated to both Mental Health Awareness and Family Wellness, May invites practices that nourish the mind, body, and spirit through connection with nature and mindful routines.

1. Seasonal Nutrition & Detoxification

May is Celebrate Holistic Nutrition Month, highlighting the role of food in whole-person health.

  • Eat the Rainbow: Incorporate seasonal produce like asparagus, sweet peas, radishes, strawberries, and rhubarb. These fresh greens and berries support liver function and digestion.
  • Gut Health Support: Focus on prebiotic-rich fibers and probiotic-rich fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, or Greek yogurt to strengthen your microbiome.
  • Spring Detox: Use natural antihistamines like local honey or herbal teas such as dandelion and nettle to support the body during the transition to warmer weather.

2. Mindful Movement & Nature

With longer days and blooming growth, May's energy is vibrant and outward-moving.

  • Earthing/Grounding: Take your shoes off and walk barefoot on grass to reconnect with the earth.
  • Micro-Moments in Nature: Take a one-minute "nature pause" to observe bird songs or budding flowers.
  • Gentle Activity: Engage in 150 minutes of moderate activity weekly, such as gardening, cycling, or yoga, to stimulate circulation and boost mood-enhancing endorphins.

3. Mental & Emotional Wellness

As Mental Health Awareness Month, May emphasizes checking in with your internal state.

  • Morning Rituals: Start your day with 5 minutes of mindful breathing or meditation to set a calm tone.
  • Gratitude Practice: Journal three things you are grateful for daily to shift your perspective toward positivity.
  • Digital Detox: Unplug from technology at least 30 minutes before bed to improve sleep quality and reduce information overload.

4. Home Energy Refresh

Renew the energy of your living space to align with the season.

  • Ventilation: Open all windows every morning to let fresh air and natural light flow through your home.
  • Declutter: Clear heavy winter items and replace them with lighter textiles or fresh herbs like rosemary and lavender to brighten the room's energy.
